Social media nobody owns
The fediverse is thousands of servers, run by people and collectives, that talk to each other. You join one and follow anyone on any other. Like email: it doesn't matter whether you use Gmail or something else, you can write to everyone.
No owner
No company decides what you see or sells what you do. Each server has its own rules, and if you don't like them, you move.
No algorithm
You see what the people you follow post, in order. Nothing pushed at you to keep you scrolling.
Your account is yours
If you change servers, your followers come with you. You don't start from zero.
For the curiousHow it works inside
All these servers speak the same language: ActivityPub, an open W3C standard since 2018. That's why Mastodon (for writing), Pixelfed (photos), PeerTube (video) or Lemmy (forums) can follow each other even though they're different programs.
An address like @ana@mastodon.social says who you are and where you live, just like an email. When you follow someone on another server, yours asks theirs to send their posts over; there's no centre everything passes through.
